Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. Her aunt was an overnight nurse in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve to promote activism. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was socially conscious and taught her how to make use of the arts as a means of expression. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was motivated to make a documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash inside the house of one of the jury. As a result of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in a small production studio right after she graduated from school. The year 1999 was the time she established her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency.
